Some information about my academic career:
1988 i started to study mechanical engineering and economics at the Technical University in Graz. At first I did not like it very much but then I got a kick and I could manage to finish my degree. The picture shows me surrounded by my proud parents and friends from my fraternity after receiving the diploma.

During my studies I got an interest in the field of naval architecture. Because of this I went to Hamburg to spend one year at the Institut für Schiffbau of Hamburg's university. A second reason was my interest in sailing. In Hamburg I found the perfect possibility to combine studies and hobby. Further I did my final thesis there - the topic was about the Fast Ferries on the Elbe river - and I got the opportunity to apply for a scholarship to do a Dr. Course in Japan. In the last year back in Graz i entered the Zeichensaal fuer Wärmetechnik. There I had the possibility to prepare well for my last examinations but also I had much fun together with other colleagues.
During my studies in Graz I entered the Grazer akad. B! Allemannia. This is a fraternity - but different from the fraternities known in the united states. Very good english information is available here. During my stay in Hamburg I as well entered the Hamburger B! Germania. I personnaly think that I obtained lots of valuable experiences besides very good friends during my time in these fraternities. I do not divide the opinion of some people who think that this kind of recreational activities is antique and not according to time. If you want to discuss this topic with me please send me an E-mail.
Though my application was accepted I am in Japan since October 1999. I stay at Hiroshima
University and do resaerch in the fields of fatigue and corrosion. My thesis' topic is: "Study of lifetime safety assurance of structures based on the monitoring and maintenance".
